Drena De Niro is an American actress, producer, and filmmaker best known for her decades-long presence in film and television, as well as her connection to one of Hollywood’s most celebrated acting dynasties. While she’s often introduced as the daughter of legendary actor Robert De Niro, Drena De Niro has built her own body of work across acting, producing, and behind-the-camera projects.

Early Life and Family

Drena De Niro was born on September 3rd in New York City (sources list her birth year variously as 1967, 1970, and 1971). She is the biological daughter of actress Diahnne Abbott. When Abbott married Robert De Niro in 1976, Drena took his surname and became his adoptive daughter. She also has a half-brother, Raphael De Niro, who is a real estate broker in New York.

Drena De Niro’s upbringing was notably unconventional. She split her childhood between New York City, Los Angeles, and Italy, an itinerant lifestyle that exposed her early to art, film, and fashion. That mix of environments is often cited as a key influence on her eventual move into the entertainment industry.

Career in Acting

Drena De Niro’s acting career began in the mid-1990s. Her early roles included parts in Grace of My Heart (1996), Wag the Dog (1997), and Great Expectations (1998). Over the following years, she built a steady filmography, appearing in:

  • At First Sight (1999)
  • The 24 Hour Woman (1999)
  • City by the Sea (2002)
  • Hands of Stone (2016)
  • Joy (2015)
  • A Star Is Born (2018)
  • The Intern (2015)

On television, Drena De Niro has appeared in series such as Mozart in the Jungle and the more recent political thriller Zero Day. Her range across film and TV reflects a career built on consistency rather than a single breakout role.

Producing and Directing Work

Beyond acting, Drena De Niro has worked as a producer, including a co-producing credit on the film Furlough. She also made her directorial debut in 2001 with the short documentary Girls & Dolls (2000), which premiered on PBS’s “Reel New York” series and won the award for best directorial debut at the New York Independent Film and Video Festival that year.

Earlier in her career, she also worked as a model and DJ, and served as a musical supervisor for Giorgio Armani stores and runway shows — a role that showcased her ties to the fashion world alongside her film work.

Personal Life and Loss

Drena De Niro has one child, a son named Leandro, born in 2004. Leandro tragically passed away in 2023, and Drena has since spoken publicly about honoring his memory, including marking his birthday as a tribute to him. She has also been involved in philanthropic work, supporting causes tied to education, mental health, and the arts.

Drena De Niro Today

Decades into her career, Drena De Niro remains active in film and television, continuing to take on acting roles while also contributing as a producer. Her journey — shaped by a unique upbringing, a famous family name, and her own creative pursuits — has made her a recognizable figure in entertainment on her own terms, separate from her father’s towering legacy.
